God’s Bathroom Mirrors
By Adam Elenbaas

Parallel universes are now a mathematical probability, and concepts like quantum overlap, digital delay, and dejavu are becoming, more and more, the curious object of our attention.

While concrescense and novelty are knitting the global flow of digital information tighter and tighter, we often experiece personal moments of digital delay or overlap. We typically call these experiences synchronicities, head trips, or dejavus. Regardless of what we call them, these experiences are unmistakeable. It feels, suddenly, like we're standing in a double mirrored bathroom, sharing in one unified space and time, in one very particular ontology, one that has always been happening and always will be happening--like an absurd reverb of truer identity.
A Revolution without Enemies
By Anu Bonobo

Since Tim Leary still steals most of the headlines—and many of them bad—for psychedelic proselytizing in the ‘60s, I thought Allen Ginsberg deserved his due as one of Leary’s most articulate defenders, colleagues, and fellow-travelers. Ginsberg’s shameless integrity and sultry innocence offer charismatic counterpoint to Leary’s more superficial and self-serving crusades for psychedelic freedom.

Reviewing the new Leary biography in a recent issue of the Nation, Neal Pollack portends that today “it’s harder than ever to swallow the idea that mind-altering drug use could transform our staggering society.” My thesis pursues another possibility—at the same time I realize that Pollack has a point and that many of the younger psychonauts I encounter at festivals fail to focus on the revolutionary force flavoring their recreational mindfood.

Ginsberg’s old words give new juice to the eternal debate about the social implications of the cultural rituals shared by those who imbibe power plants and pills—reminding us that LSD “teaches one not to cling to anything, including LSD.” For Ginsberg as for me, insights gained in the Gaian mind of great visions have the inherent but often unrealized potential to renovate daily life forever—and this notion is inextricably linked to poetry and spirituality. While the psychedelic warrior’s mission to change consciousness engages in combat on an internal battlefield, Ginsberg never avoided more public confrontations with what he called “a vast conspiracy to impose one level of mechanical consciousness on mankind and exterminate all manifestations of that unique part of human sentience.”
Cyanobacteria to the Rescue
By Melinda Wenner

Could this weird-looking microbe save the world? A biologist at the University of Hawai'i has harnessed the power of cyanobacteria to develop a technology that could turn harmful atmospheric carbon dioxide into ethanol for fuel.

Barlow Blotto

Yeah, I know what you're thinking, particularly if you've been personally present for some of my more incandescent displays over the past several months. But that's not what I'm talking about. And, anyway, I've once again turned over a "new" leaf.

No, instead I am referring to my recent musical collaborations with a juicy (if obscure) Chicago band named Mr. Blotto, efforts which have now bourne fruit in the form of an album named Barlow Shanghai. (Download it or order the richly illustrated CD <http://www.munckmusic.com/wms/random/index.html>here. It's cheaper than bailing me out of jail and I will be almost as grateful.)

Here's the back-story:

A couple of years ago, I was passing through Chicago, and, as is his custom, my local pal Peer Munck made another attempt to disabuse me of my belief that Chicago is little more (or, more likely, less) than New York without a sense of humor.

On this occasion, he took me to an amiable little club to hear a band named Hack and Wheeze. (Given the cultural flavor of both the band and the audience, I would guess the name did not derive from one of them having once suffered pneumonia.) I thought they were pretty good fun - though I am sort of a slut for music - and besides, they had a particular fan I really enjoyed dancing with.

Hanging out with them after the gig, I learned that a couple of them were also members of a band named - you guessed it - Mr. Blotto. The latter happened to be playing a much larger venue the next night. It turns out there was nothing unusual about this since Mr. Blotto has been playing somewhere in Chicago about every week for years.

Apparently, the members of Mr. Blotto had made a strategic decision, early in their musical career, that they didn't want to become a big deal touring band. These were family guys, neighborhood fellas of the sort that are Chicago's real strength, who had observed the perils of the road and decided instead to stay home and earn a solid enough local reputation to ward off day jobs. They had seen how disruptive such common touring practices as "off-shore drilling" (as it is known in the trade) could be on the integrity of home and hearth. Besides, they weren't and aren't fancy. Someone else could drive the pink Cadillac over the cliff.

I was impressed by their modesty and wisdom, and, come the next night, I was really impressed by their musical energy. While there was no mistaking who had been their central musical inspiration (a certain California cult whose name rhymes with dread), the same could be said of a large number of other improvisational groups with a more national reputation. And they had managed to graft some genuinely new growth on those old roots.

Thus, whenever I passed through Chicago after that, I made a point of hearing Mr. Blotto if they happened to be playing that night, which they generally were. I got to know them pretty well. They were easy to dance to, particularly if the above-mentioned fan was present, which she almost always was.

Meanwhile, on another track, my own song-writing career had become discouraging. My various post-Dead endeavors had been systematically butchered by producers who were determined to make something "commercial" for bands that by nature were not. I felt like I was getting less respect than Rodney Dangerfield at a Greenwich garden party and was beginning to think that I didn't deserve it either. If people were going to make a consistent practice of thoroughly rewriting my songs, it was possible they weren't much good to begin with. Songwriting wasn't fun anymore. There is little delight in being sold out without your assent and even less if you don't actually make any money in the process. I'd decided to hang it up.

But one night about a year and a half ago, the Blottos (encouraged by my friend Peer, who also has a little record company called MunckMix and want to record them) asked me if I'd be willing to write some songs for them. Furthermore, they offered to let me co-produce any record that came of it. Since they clearly weren't lusting for suites at the 4 Seasons and had even offered to let me keep a hand on the wheel, I said I'd give it a try. Little was at stake and, besides, I enjoyed their company.

The process turned out to be a gas. They were almost frighteningly easy to write with and they seemed to genuinely admire the work I was doing with them. Nobody was wearing much of an ego about it. Not even me.

Cut to the near present, next Friday (the 13), when Barlow Shanghai will be officially released. (The name refers to the innocent drunks who were press-ganged, or "shanghaied," into shipboard service against their sober will. It's a little misleading, since I was sober and came willingly, but I can see what they were thinking with they came up with the name.)

It's not going to change the history of music, but it's entertaining stuff. For something done so casually, it's really pretty cool. In fact, I believe, with admitted bias, that it's a good bit cooler than those labored productions to which I had submitted myself previously where money, fame, and Big Art were the object.

So. Give it a listen. If you dig it too, tell your friends about it. And even though I didn't do it for the money, I hope a bunch of you will buy it. The Blotto boys are, as I say, modest in their aspirations, but that doesn't mean they ought to starve for their virtue. And even virtue should sometimes be rewarded with something more than itself, if only to confuse the bastards.

Also, if you happen to be in Chicago, we're having a BlottoFrenzy there on Friday night to celebrate the release. I'll be there and so, I hope, will a number of you. Most of the usual BarlowFrenzy principles apply. If you can't make it, send someone who can that you think I'll like. It's a little different in that this will take place in a club and there will be a cover charge to support the venue and the band. But, if you go to Peer's <http://www.munckmusic.com/wms/random/index.html>website and buy either a download or a CD you'll get five bucks off of that. (Just print out your order confirmation and bring it to the gig.)

Here are the details:

When: Friday, October 13, 2006 at 10:00 pm
Where: Joe's on Weed, 940 West Weed, Chicago, IL

Even if you don't like the record, for which I'll have to take considerable blame, I can guarantee you'll enjoy hearing these guys play live. And it's always good to be around an audience where just about everyone gets down with it.

Following that event, by the way, I'm actually headed to Shanghai (for the second time in three months), but more of that later.

Meanwhile...

Preserve wild life, and don't forget to love yourselves,
Free Burning Man Ticket to Whoever Brings Me My Laser Gloves...

Dear Ones,

After months of silence during which I've been in Europe, Brazil, China, and New Orleans twice, during which I've fallen in love, been healthy, been fabulously self-destructive, during which I've met remarkable people, famous and obscure, thrown many BarlowFrenzies filled with epiphanous transformations and unspeakable depravities, during which I've collected enough stories to keep you entertained over a campfire or a martini for years... I'm sorry to tell you that I reach out now only because I want something from one of you (or some friend of one of you) and I want it immediately..

(You will think this is incredible trivial, but we all have our own totems and blankies...)

I'm presently in Reno on my way to Burning Man and I have left my laser gloves in San Francisco. Those of you who have seen my laser gloves, as well as those of you who have been to Burning Man, and especially those of you who have seen me dance with my laser gloves at Burning Man will know how critical is this omission from my ritual kit.

So. If you (or someone you know or someone who might get this if your forward it freely around the Bay Area) is still in San Francisco and about to head to Burning Man, please have them call me at once. My number is 917/863-2073 and it will still work for a couple more hours as I head north into the desert.

Following my ascent into radio silence, I will still have access to e-mail, so you can contact me that means. You can also Skype me, possibly with voice, at johnperrybarlow or iChat (or AIM) with me at barlow1.

Or...

You can send an e-mail to Nancy Levidow <nanlev@well.com>. She is the general factotum and fixer of my good Brother John Gilmore, in whose back bathroom I left them at 2 this morning as I blew threw San Francisco while rodding an RV full of beautiful redheads from Los Angeles to Reno. I was tired and distracted.

Nancy will then coordinate delivering them into your care, following which you, if your are loving and kind, will deliver them back into mine.

Then, please, bring them to me on the Playa, where I will be camped at Solaris, a neighborhood of Otter Camp. Solaris is located between Eager and Destiny (nice, huh?) and between 3:15 and 3:30. In fact, I hope that any of you at Burning Man will come find me there, even if you're not bearing my gloves. We will slay the fatted calf and sate your every desire.

So. What's the reward? What's in it for you?

Well, I will provide a FREE BURNING MAN TICKET to anyone who slips my laser gloves onto my hands, and I will meet you at the gate with that ticket if I'm already inside. If you already have a ticket, now you can bring a worthy friend.

New Year? What a great idea!

Dear Oh Dear,

I'm deeply down with the idea of a New Year. Twenty uh-oh Five is one I can trade in without getting any sort of look at the alternative.

I'll go with door number 2006, Bob.

And, praise grace, I will go there with you. I hope I will see you many times in it and that we'll both be glad every time I do.

In the meantime, all I know is that I am really here now and only now, and whatever perils the future may hold, this particularly moment, in San Francisco, California, where the air has just been washed clean by a biblical rain but there the weather is now so clement that I will ride my motorcycle to the Sea of Dreams tonight, where all three of my daughters are gathered around me, each growing more beautiful by the second, where, even though distant from you, I can still feel you as every photon in the Universe feels every other at all times.

I think I may be about to break my general silence. Maybe I won't. In the meantime, be assured that I'm both well and taking advanced courses. I pray the same for you.

May you feel loved. May you be able to accept it.

Light,

Red Crystal Serpent /Yellow Cosmic Seed year-
“Inspiration”

in a parking lot of a donut shop within Boulder Colorado eye experienced a whisper,
the Angels within the 4th dimension translating her spoken name as Scarlet,
their voice trickling down vertically from Starlight-

an Opal of Atlantis eyed heart-throb,
aquamarine halos,
her eyes re-veiling her own Angelic nativity,
she was sitting on the hood of a red Subaru, Montana licence plates-

there was an ephemeral taste of her flesh,
revealing her shoulders to all of Heaven,
the gravity of her aura pulling the eye to kiss the concaves of her skin with the conclusion of an Incident-
“As it is” a Spiritual Synapse,
the meeting of Ones lips to the goddesstafaric physique of a Woman at the moment of Galactic Resonance,
when the musicians and the dancers are but One,
“the Luminary”,
sharing the rhythmic, constellated music of Lumaria
of Atlantis,
the Songs of the Tzolkin,
the Wisdom and Idea that gave Breath to the Spiral Universe and gave sensual form to the figure of Gaia-

within the twilight of his resurrection,
Jesus encoded a Teardrop,
a shooting Star just above the outline of Rocky Mountains meditating like Buddha,
bringing the eye to day dream of the Future,
one day or night as Gaia majestically dances within the smitten toss of the Moon’s Light,
the gReasy eye and Scarlet,
our 4th dimensional alter egos,
will make Love to one another with the parallel Passions of the dance floor,
Spirits within Kama Sutra-

Tears consume my eyes now,
not because of only her,
and not because of the three days within Time that eye experienced with her and a cast of Divine Characters just last year, (Blue Crystal Storm),

“movement of Jah people”

but on account of an experience that travels beyond the 3rd dimensional word “friends”,

eye wrote Mountain girl Adams once that “Zion was that place where we get drunk and abuse drugs with our friends”,

actually Zion is the re-calibration of our Mind to its Original State,
Kerouac called it Buddhism,

eye believe that within our Spirit form,
within our Divine Mind,
that we have no concept of Vesselic gender,
male nor female,
Universally,
Cosmically,
within our native tongue of Telepathy,
within our true form,
as Buddhists,
as Mayans,
that True Love,
Friendship,
is a Consciousness known as “Harmonic Love”-

“Ah the Spiritual Convergence”,
the gathering of the Luminary,
a group Consciousness that has stood upon the shoulders, breasts and Belly of Gaia through-out a myriad Incarnations,
lifeTimes as friends,
Lovers,
brothers and sisters-
Akashic Loves ever after drawn to one another,
gravitating,
within orbit of each other due to the Songs sung, and the Music played so long ago upon the shores of Lumaria and Atlantis-

Edgar Cayce was aware of the movement long ago,
the fact that we have begun to gather,
a Spiritual Synapse occurring,
the Spirit Community becoming One-

some madman is bound to end the Vesselic Cycle,
or maybe a meteor crashing down from the Heavens-
eye possess a faith and confidence within the Mayan Constant,
the Tzolkin,
and the Prophetic Vision that by December 21st 2012 a critical number of us will have become Activated,
awoken, becoming aware of not only who we are, “In Lake’ch”,
and who we once were,
but also of who we will return once again to “be”,

bound for glory following our departure of this Vesselic Cycle,
the Climax of Babylon and the Technosphere,
and the return to the Constant Orgasm that is Zion-

a Poem for Scarlet/Fire
(You know who you are)

Eye awoke face down upon the wooden floor boards of a Union Pacific boxcar,
an 18 year old Joan Baez sits cross-legged like Siddhahartha on the corner of Market St,
San Francisco,
burgundy stained toes from pacing like an Angel upon the wine soaked floor of the Pacific freighter,
wings lifting her up above the cumulus,
drops of wine spilling from a leather canteen,
dispersing upon particles of water gathering as clouds-

Gaian Castles,
Mountains, roll past as eye look out of the open door of the boxcar-
a Crystal Moon hangs over Zion & blue birds perch atop goddess shoulders-

eye can sense the quivering of the Earth,
the bed of Space,
the Macrocosm,
like satin sheets enclosing her sensual figure-
“ah the goddess Earth incarnate”,
the Golden Planet,
the Sun Buddha caressing her skin,
warm charisma of Stellar Buddha pushing Crystalline temples of ice across her flesh-

eye become cognizant that eye am actually alone,
Baez being a hallucinatory image-
my groin is soaked, and eye worry momentarily that the dampness is piss,
realizing it to be wine following the pressing of my pant legs between my fingers,
the aroma of California Port lingering within my skin-
eye contemplate the Philosophy of wine resting within the lines of my fingertips,
soot imbedded beneath my nails,

“ eye am energy in Divine form,
a Spiral of Light, a helical matrix encompassed by a cellular mass,
a Vessel”

after propping myself upward, sitting along the side of the rail car wall,
eye pull a tin of shwa out from within my jacket pocket,
progressing to roll a marijuana cigaret-
eye withdraw a box of water proof matches from the inner depths of my canvass rucksack,
Thought becomes a prelude to the element of fire,

Wisdom can be likened to a match-head,
her cast of Light being present whence god put Creation of Gaia into motion-
Wisdom’s aura being the first image witnessed by the Earth as she drew her eyes open for the very first Time-

eye became cognizant of my origins,
a rain forest Light years away,
where a catapilar travels upwards upon a helical path, the green of bamboo beneath her feet,
a back drop of Space hanging over her shoulder,
two Sirian orbs,
Golden Azure,
Lucid Moons surrounded by Star-light-

once eye was a catapillar within a tweed suit,
until my Dharma cocoon, the trains whistle an “Om”,
laid flat out on my back,
the Spiritual sensation of being drunk to stay warm,
viewing a Star-scape,
a halo above a Mountain silhouette,
framed by the box car door,
like a candle’s Light reflecting within a window pane,
wax tenderly burning upon a hardwood cedar table,
my Grandfather’s cabin home within the kiss of the Oregon Wood-

as a boy, my recollection of Buddha Cave,
the hands of my mother’s father Furthur stirring memories of the Mayan Jesus,
as he, Kukulkan, sat across from the eye upon the Great Day of Knowledge-
as a Scribe eye recorded the Tzolkin,
Thoth, the Wizard,
dictating it off the tongue of the Plumed Serpent,
as they drove spikes into his wrists, Ra burning the Sacred Calender upon his tongue-

harnessing the Divine Nod,
(the Akashic Reverie affecting the Lunatic like junk to a Tangier Sunset,
Bill Burroughs, the Sun caressing his eye-lids),
eye press the Peddle of Life to a stick of rolled up marijuana ,
the match-head projecting the Language of Silence-

my Breath,
As it is,
“the Weeping of Volcanoes”,
the sinking of Atlantis,
most Eye,
pupil of Divine Memory,
prophet, student,
the Silence a conduit for Wisdom,
the academics of all the eye see-

syncopated ambience,
my adjectivness regarding the roll of the train as it travels down the tracks,
although within the Dank Thunder the Silence coexisting-

Harmonic Resonance,
the Crystalline fibers of the Kuxxan Suum connecting the eye to my Inner Belly-

there are scratches upon my back from a tramp goddess the previous night,
the Moon’s Light hugging my sleeping bag as she and eye made Love within an aura of wine and Star-light-

being high eye travel backward within Time to her fractal eyes,
Thought,
Stars of hazel surrounded by an atmosphere of blue,
a Radiant skyline,
an Akashic Journal entry, hand-written by Breath,
the Memories of all that we have experienced recorded within the gentle push of air that brings us Life,
eye recollect as vibrant rays of Golden orange Sun ascend into Holy blue Heaven-

she lay, her only motion being that of Breath,
blades of grass swayed,
arching,
lazy like the after-glow of a Woman,
a weeping willow hung down like a Star, surrounding the two of us-

within the midst of a goddesstafari drunk,
the way she quivered within Orgasm-
eye stare into the Infinite,
the Starry darkness of her navel,
Buddhism,
the Law of Time,
and the Rastafaric element of that moment,
Babylon having been forgotten with the first touch of my tongue to her material body,
penetrating her aura,
caressing her nude Vessel with the Breath of wine,
my lips reacting to her as if she was the daughter of Gaia herself-

as the steel of the boxcar wall aroused my cognitive senses of my surroundings,
eye recalled the Italian wool coat the Earth had worn as a providential Lover of my own youth-
the way she always dipped her index finger into a cup of coffee,
tasting it before she dared to bring the mug to meet with the articulateness her lips-

her ankles would intersect in my lap as she sat across from the eye reading favored verses of literature from her childhood, or Poems that she had hand written herself within the throw of the Moon’s Light,
a puddle of Lunar Luminance upon her shoulder as she lay nude within the Bed of Space,
inscribing “Love letters to the Stars” upon the pages of a finely made hemp journal-

my hands would grasp her feet, massaging them like an “Om”,
she would go on like Gregory Corso,
recalling the Precession of the Equinox’s ,
the warmth of the Kuxxan Suum,
and the Timely unfolding of Space-

she would translate her Memories into Planetary Prose,
tales of the Breathing Macrocosm,
Infinite Light Bodies such as our Sun,
Great Buddhist Stars,
Heliopausmic Mantras,
and the Greatest Love Story ever told,
herself and the Moon,
Gaia and eyeself-
collected Poems, “of this Universe”

lookem in the eye

You must look them in the eye and mean it!!!
A thought crossed my mind the other day that simply enabling others to feel good about themselves, would solve a lot of problems. I Work as an RN in a nursing home and I have seen a shift in the way residents and staff get on. There has been a bit of a conscious effort to provide non-patronizing honest encouragements and feed back. I have been telling my aids to “look the resident in the eye when you speak. It encourages a strong interaction. And to say things like I don’t mind helping. But they have to mean it. That is the catch. It world sound a bit naive to think that a person can change the world by simply encouraging self worth, but you must mean what you say for it to work. False compliments don’t work. I make a point to give praise of my aids in public. I reassure folks that we do care and I know I can took them in the eye when I say it.. I hope to share this place of personal integrity, and reinforce with the notion that, choosing to greet the world from a place of trust rather than fear is no small task. But, well worth the effort!!!

I just found out I owe qwest several hundred dollars from 1998. they won't hook me up until I pay and I really can'[t afford it. Is this money still collectible? or do you know whereI can find out?

I just heard of this site by reading JPB's blog - I check in with his writing every so often, but I guess it has been a while. I have been busy.

I think this site is great. Only been here for 2 days but I can see its potential and it seems like there are some very good people on here.

What is strange is that I am pretty on top of new technology/software. I am the guy other people are getting the new stuff from. So far as I can tell, no one I know here in Boston or even in New York City knows about his site - which I find strange since it has been around for a while.

Well I hope I didn't get on here now just to see it disappear. It does seem like most of the people on here are in the San Fran area. Has there been a marketing campaign? Or is that not the purpose?

Nice to be in this tribe with you all.

Let's take a moment to appreciate the calm before the storm. Here we two are - old war horses, raring up for another fight - taking it to the streets of desire, corruption and greed. Whether they be retired generals, ex-governors or disgruntled software pioneers - the cat's out of teh bag on this "cult of the CEO" scam they've been pulling over our eyes. We've got an open source project - which will (hopefully) help unite all these disparate elements of the world. It's called the PeopleAggregator.com - based upon FOAF. The goal is inter-connect various social networks together.
